Educator Mentors

Teacher cadets select an educator to mentor them throughout the year. Cadets must meet with mentors--either face-to-face or virtually--eight times throughout the year. It is the cadet's responsibility to communicate with the mentor to schedule meeting dates. Below is a calendar of suggested topics for discussion. These topics are suggestions only: cadets may discuss other burning topics of interest to them.

FALL SEMESTER:  MEET 4 TIMES, once monthly
  • SEPTEMBER:  Get to Know You
    • What do you teach? How long have you been teaching?
    • What do you like most about teaching?
    • What do you find most challenging about teaching?
    • Have you ever had a career outside of education?
    • Do you aspire to move to a different position in education or outside education?
  • OCTOBER: Teacher Licensure
    • What are you licensed to teach?
    • What process did you go through to get licensed?
    • How do you renew your license?
    • What do you do for professional development?
    • Do you have plans to add any areas to your license? If so, how will you do so?
  • NOVEMBER: Resume Tips
    • How would you suggest I improve my resume?
    • Would you be willing to share a copy of your resume with me?
    • How have you used your resume in your own career?
    • How important do you think having a strong resume is for getting a job in the educational field?
  • DECEMBER: Interviewing Skills
    • Tell me about your own experiences in interviewing for jobs.
    • What advice or tips would you offer for having a strong interview?
    • What should I NOT do in an interview?

SPRING SEMESTER:  MEET 4 TIMES, once monthly
  • JANUARY: Getting to Know Students and Families
    • How do you get to know your students?
    • How do you communicate with parents?
    • How important is it to get to know students and parents?
    • What does TESS say about building rapport with students and parents?
  • FEBRUARY: Internship--Classroom Procedures & Managing Student Behavior
    • What procedures have you created to make your classroom run smoothly?
    • How do you teach procedures to students?
    • Are there any procedures you wish you had established? If so, what?
    • How important do you think classroom procedures are?
    • What are your classroom rules?
    • How do you communicate rules to students and parents?
    • How do you manage student behavior?
    • What resources have you used to learn how to manage student behavior?
    • What do you think is most important about classroom management?
  • MARCH: Internship--Lesson Planning
    • What format do you use to plan lessons?
    • How do you go about planning lessons? How do you collaborate with your colleagues?
    • What feedback do you get on your lesson plans? Who gives you feedback?
    • How important do you think planning is?
    • What different kinds of learning strategies do you use?
    • How do you differentiate learning?
    • How do you assess learning during the lesson and at the end of a lesson or unit?
  • APRIL: Educational Topics
    • What are some of the most important issues in education we face?
    • What are important issues in the Little Rock School District and in your school?
    • Write your own question about a specific educational topic that interests you.
  • MAY:  Internship--Starting & Ending the Year
    • How do you launch a new school year?
    • What first day activities do you use? First week activities?
    • How do you end a school year with your students?
    • What end of the year tasks do you have to complete as a teacher?


REFLECTION
  1. Each month, cadets will write a minimum one page reflection on their mentor meeting. The reflection should include a summary of the discussion (what?), the cadet's reactions/thoughts/feelings (so what?); and a discussion of how the cadet can use information gained (now what?). 
  2. Each semester, the cadet will submit a log of meetings with mentor. The log must include the date of each meeting, location of each meeting, and be signed by the mentor.
