Phony Vs. Earned Self-Esteem

We'll be exploring the role self-esteem plays in learning. In preparation for our discussion in class, I've asked you to read Joel Wade's article Phony vs. Earned Self-Esteem. Wade argues "real, earned self-esteem" can't be "given to you by another person," rather "it is a reputation that you build with yourself over time, and through conscious thought and action."

Be sure to come to class prepared to discuss Wade's ideas. You'll need your note card ("snippet" on one side; your reaction on the other side) and your annotated copy of the article.

I'm looking forward to a scintillating discussion!

Here are some words/concepts from the article you might review if they are unfamiliar to you. Try Googling them!

  • narcissim
  • entitlement
  • inflated
  • fixed vs. growth mindset
